Guthrie and Hanger Clinic hosted a special presentation for staff this week focused on the recovery journey of a local teacher who received trauma services at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital. The event featured former trauma patient Jeremiah Serfas of Sayre, Pa. and Guthrie vascular surgeon, Dr. Lawrence Sampson. They both spoke about the 2011 accident that brought Serfas to Guthrie, its immediate aftermath, and Serfas’ ongoing recovery.

A new system for tracking prescriptions of controlled substances will launch on Aug. 25 in Pennsylvania. The PA Department of Health’s Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) will require all providers to check the online database if the prescriber is prescribing a controlled substance for the first time or suspects abuse. The system is designed as a tool to help providers and pharmacists track their patients’ controlled substance prescriptions and prevent abuse of these drugs. It is similar to the I-STOP program previously enacted in New York.
Three weeks ago, a fire occurred in an office on the fifth floor of Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital. Staff carried out a safe evacuation of all patients in the area, and the fire was extinguished by a sprinkler head in the room.

The Guthrie Clinic Pharmacy has recently started a new prescription delivery service for inpatients at Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, called 'Meds to Beds'. Patients admitted to the hospital can have the medications prescribed by their physician delivered straight to their room before they are discharged. The 'Meds to Beds' program aims to reduce readmissions to the hospital by ensuring our patients are able to take their medications as prescribed.
